Sparrow Dance Productions Book Club

Beginning this August 17th, 2024, 9:00-10:00am in the main Sparrow lobby, readers are

welcome to our first Book Club gathering. *Then every third Saturday morning of the month

thereafter. This book club is catered to dancers and their families in order to: further educate

dancers in their craft, to further promote literacy in dance and to work as a community to

conserve the knowledge of dance art-whether it be as readers, dancers and/or audience

members.

In preparation for our first gathering, all you need to bring is yourselves and a copy of Karen

Valby’s, The Swans of Harlem. Readers do not need to do any reading prior to the first

gathering. During the first gathering, readers are greeted with tea and coffee, time for a mix and

mingle and a live reading of the book’s Preface altogether. We have already had interest from a

few dancers. One of which is going to do the book club with her grandmother. So precious!

For those of who do not already know, I was a public school dance educator for twelve years. I

have a passion for incorporating reading, writing and literacy through dance. As the business

continues to grow, I am increasingly incorporating meaningful programs that enhance a person’s

overall dance education. The teacher in me is ecstatic to be launching a book club centering

around Dance knowledge and Dance education. For this year, I plan to alternate books: a book

with historical references such as biographies; and then, a book that is a Novel/Fiction. I would

like to have purposeful and pleasurable reads for all to enjoy. If this year’s book club is a

success and we see enough interest, then I plan to add age/grade leveled book clubs in the

future. For example, readers from 3-5 years old will join the Angelina Ballerina Book Club etc...

James and I have big plans for our little Dance home and growing into a Dance Learning Center

in true Conservatory form is just one of our many visions for Sparrow Dance Productions.
